Spirit Care Sunday – What Does Your Spirit Need?

Blessed Evening my brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray you’ve spent the week living intentionally and with purpose. As you may know it’s Self-Care Sunday, however, I’ve decided to change it to “Spirit Care Sunday.” I was among the many people who were apart of the Bedside Ministry this morning. Lol. Tuning into The Potter’s House by way of Houston. Bishop Jakes spoke from the subject matter of “A Thirst Collision.” I encourage you all to check the sermon out as it has inspired the “Spirit Care Sunday” post for today. As always I pray that this post encourages you to self-reflect and allows you to open your heart to what the Holy Spirit is telling you. Blessings.

I want to start our conversation off with a simple question. What does your spirit need? Your spirit is the nonphysical part of you which is the seat of emotions and character; your soul. If you’re anything like me then this is the first time someone is asking you this question. When we look in the bible there are several texts that reference the spirit. Proverbs 20:27 says, “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.” Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:17 says, “But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.” John 4:24 says, “GOD IS A SPIRIT AND THOSE WHO WORSHIP HIM MUST WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.” I believe it’s safe to say that our spirit needs to, has to, and should desire to be one with Jesus Christ.

So if our spirit needs Jesus then there are some things that we need to do in order to build our spirit man. We understand that coming into a relationship with Jesus requires the death of our flesh. This is why the bible talks about being born again of the spirit. When we are born again we have a new desire not of our flesh but of God. We no longer are controlled by our human inclinations. We have surrendered our spirit to Jesus Christ. Understand, He isn’t interested in fixing our flesh. There aren’t any parts of it that are salvageable. The only way we can get rid of it is if we let it die. This is why you can’t keep holding onto that person or that addiction because those things will kill you before you have a chance to kill them. We are talking about in the spirit. Anything or anyone that keeps you from God is killing your spirit. I don’t know about you but there are some people or something that you need to tell, “You’re Not Going To Kill Me.”

So again, “What does your spirit need?” The first thing that your spirit needs is for your flesh to die.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.^[a”
“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. ⁶ Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
